On Monday we left KL and headed to the cameron highlands. The road was very steep and narrow up the mountains and as we got just 25km away the road was blocked due to an accident. This meant and 2.5 hour detour back down the mountain and then up the other side!
In the end we made it and decided as we only had 1 day there to do an organised tour which took almost all the sights in. We visited the tea plantations, walked through the mossy forest, visited a strawberry farm, a butterfly park, a rose/flower garden and a few other places of interest. The tour was excellent and we both really enjoyed it!
On Wednesday we left for Taman Negara, a national park in Malaysia and some of the oldest rainforest in the area. The last part of our trip involved a 2 hour boat ride to the town we are staying. We knew that over Xmas there had been some flooding in the area but we weren't really ready for what we saw. The river banks had been totally devastated with fallen trees everywhere and the whole jungle dead 20/30 metres back from the edge of the river. As we got nearer to the town we saw houses half demolished on the edge of the banks where landslides had occurred and in town you could see the watermark on some of the buildings. We water had risen well over 2 storeys! Very eye opening and all this has resulted in not many tourists about as the majority of hotels and restaurants etc are closed as they slowly clean everything up.
Never the less, the local people are rebuilding this beautiful place and today we enjoyed a great hike into the jungle! It was extremely hot and sweaty but we managed to climb to one of the peaks and had a spectacular view over the forest.
We are staying here another 3 nights and doing a few more treks including a night trek tomorrow which should be fun. The plan is to leave to go back to KL on Sunday, stay for a few days then head to Malacca.
