4:15am! This is the unnatural time I had to get up this morning the prepare breakfast, before our 6am Safari. Brutal. We had breakfast and then jumped in our pop top safari vans and headed for Nakuru national park.
We got to the park and while the guides were paying for us to go in, a monkey got into one of the trucks and stole Aaron's packed sandwiches, cheeky little devil. It was really funny, I laughed, although I was to get mine later in the day.
We drove through the gates and I fell asleep for the first two hours of the game drive, didn't really matter too much as it had rained the night before and no one saw anything. We drove down to the lake and saw some waterbuck which is a new addition to my list of animals in Africa. We also saw Cape Buffalo and heaps of Zebras, which I never get tired of. I even yelled "Bloop, Bloop, Bloop, Bloop!" out of the roof, which is the rather strange noise Zebras make, however, they just looked at me like I was the strange one.
We drove right up to the beautiful lake and we were allowed to get out and get closer to the hundreds of flamingos, that seemed to be making the edges of the lake pink. I got really close and got some great pictures, they really do make the same noise as they do in the cartoon version of Alice in Wonderland.
We kept driving around the lake and we came across a white rhino, we got within five meters of him, and when he stood up I was sure he was going to charge us, but he just ambled over and sat somewhere else. He looked truly magnificent against the backdrop of the lake. We also saw a huge herd of Cape Buffalo, who had lots of calves with them.
We drove up to the look out in the highest point in the park to get a better view of the lake, whose surface reflected the sky perfectly, making it one of the most spectacular things I have seen yet in Africa. While Siobhan was taking my picture in the gazebo at the top, a huge male baboon came up the cliffs behind me and sat right next to me. Siobhan yelled for me to get out of the way and when I looked next to me and saw a big, hairy hand, I moved like grease lightening. I did manage to sneak back and get a picture with my potentially vicious local.
We got back in the vans and then went past a troop of baboons, we stopped and another male jumped on top of our van and tried to get in through the open roof. He was right above my head and I was screaming, Siobhan had her leg raised in defence and was also screaming. Denis was the only one of us with any sense I'm ashamed to say, and towel whipped the baboon away with his jacket.
After we screamed at our driver to get us away from the baboons, as Guy and I were hung out of the open roof trying to close it, we continued on, not seeing much for a while. We came to the edge of the bush and saw a herd of giraffes grazing on the trees. We came to a crossing in the road, but the river had flooded over it and it was a raging rapid, so we had to go another way. The other way a huge tree had fallen in our path and we had to drive off road to go around it.
It seemed to take us ages to get out of the park and I fell asleep yet again. We got back to camp and the group on cooking made a really good chicken stir fry. We were supposed to do a chameleon walk, but we all decided to hang out near the open fire at the bar and let the guide bring the chameleons to us. He brought us two little ones and I immediately put one on my nose, which everyone laughed at. I played with the chameleons for about two hours before going off to bed. Not before noticing the Dragoman stickers Aaron had put on the Tucan truck, which Kat is now on.
