We left for North Rim dreaming of the solitude the guidebook had promised and also the ice-cold beer and posh lunch we had promised ourselves at the Grand Canyon lodge which apparently had the best view of the Canyon. It took us 4 hours to drive around the rim (240 miles) even though the North and South rims are only 11 miles apart as the crow flys. We passed through indian reservations and brush land. The scenary changed dramatically and the 70 mile drive into North Rim from the highway was stunning with meadows full of deer and suicidal coyotes all trying to be the first to attach themselves to our tires.
When we pulled up in the car park we were surprised at how quiet it was and began to get excited as we thought we may have needed a reservation at the lodge... No reservation required as the damn place was closed for the season!!! arghhh!! nothing was open and our supplies consisted of a bag of almonds (from Brian and Suzies), 2 biscuits and half a bottle of water... not quite what we had in mind but our meagre picnic was spent in complete solitude on the very edge of the canyon with stunning views all to ourselves... PERFECT!
Left the North Rim and Arizona behind and entered Utah... Our accomodation (picked by Jacq i hasten to add) was a faux-victorian B&B complete with weirdo front desk lady (think Jennifer Pringle from Anne of Greengables!?!)... Our room had a bath right in the center of it... very odd indeed.
