As today was my first full day in Sydney, it was time to get out the map and plan where I was going to go. There were plenty of sights to see and I also had plenty of time to go and see them. I had spoken with Adam and he wasn't getting back from Rochdale for a couple more days so I had all day today and tomorrow before I get to see him and move into his apartment.
Route planned, I headed off on foot from the hotel and went to see the following:-
St Mary’s Cathedral was near Hyde Park and they were currently getting ready for the Sydney Marathon and had a huge marquee set up out front of the cathedral where people would be checking in before the race next weekend. From the cathedral there was a great shot of the Sydney Tower and I thought then, that I must get up there to get some great panoramic shots of the city, so I must chose a nice clear sunny day to go up there.
My next stop was to walk down to Circular Quays to go and see the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. No trip to Sydney would be complete without seeing these two iconic structures. Now I just had to find the perfect place in Sydney to get the perfect shot of these two icons, but for now I would just take a few snap shots of them.
While just leaving the Opera House I got a call from Leander and Debbie who were on their very last day in Australia and was just checking to see if I was anywhere in the vicinity of Sydney. I let them know that I was just by the Opera House and they were quite surprised to see that I was in Sydney and they wanted to introduce me to their sister and brother-in-law and I agreed to wait here while they came to join me. They turned up about 30 mins later with Leander’s sister, brother-in-law and their new born baby. We said our introductions and decided to sit and have a drink and a cake in a cafe by the opera house.
After our drink we all walked back to the YHA and say goodbye to Leander and Debbie as they catch their shuttle bus to the airport to go back home to Switzerland. This time it was our final goodbye, but they did say that I was welcome in Switzerland to come and stay with them anytime. Thanks guys, I might just take you up on that offer one day so watch out!
As I was now quite close to the footpath that lead over the Harbour Bridge I decided that i would go for a walk over to the other side of the harbour and over to the North Shores (Kirribilli district). On the south-eastern pylon of the bridge you could climb up to a lookout platform which I would have liked to have done but I had already started watching the pennies and convinced myself that the view wouldn’t be any better than from the bridge itself and the $9.50 would be better spent on some lunch.
Over on the north shore and just down from the Harbour Bridge, there was a second hand market going on which also has a few food stalls, so I decided to stop and sit and have lunch in the park near the market. I grabbed a Thai Chicken curry from one of the stalls there for around $5 and it was really tasty.
After lunch I continued walking around the north shore taking many pictures of the Opera House from the various different angles from across the harbour hoping that one would turn out good. I walked around the other side of the harbour for the rest of the afternoon before going into the nearest train station, buying a weekly pass for about $40 (which also included the ferries and busses) and headed back to my hostel for the night.
Dinner was leftovers from my van cooked on the rooftop kitchen of my hotel.
