Pedro's Mission
After travelling halfway up Baikal's westen shore and a short ferry trip we reached Olkhon Island and made our way to Khuzhir, the Islands main settlement. Me and Chris stayed at Sunny Hostel, which is not your typical hostel as we stayed in a wooden hut for the 3 nights we were on Olkhon.
Everything on the Island is very basic. All the houses are made out of wood, the roads are all dirt tracks, there is no street lighting or hot water and there are no cash machines. This is the reason I came travelling, to escape from city life and to see the beauty of the countryside.
The day we arrived on the island all we did was walk along the shore of Lake Baikal and sit and admire the stunning views. In the evening were went to Nikita's guest house and sat and drank beer and vodka around a camp fire with as few of the other travellers.
The next day, after our lie in, we sorted out our money issues and chilled out for a change. In the evening we sat and drank beer and vodka around a camp fire again.
The next day we decided to hire out mounting bikes and ride 28km (56km there and back) up and down big bloody hills to the otherside of the Island. Once we rewached the otherside we were cream crackered and sat by the river for a while. On the way back we decided to take a different route home, but we did not know that the route we had chosen involved 10km of really steep hills. After 3 and a half hours of sweating and a lot of moaning we made it back to camp had some dinner, showered and went to bed. Even though it was really hard work I actually enjoyed the bike ride and I loved Olkhon Island. I wish I could have spent more than 3 nights there but we had to leave as my visa ran/runs out on the 27th August.
I would definately go back to Olkhon Island.
