Pedro's Mission
I arrived in Krakow about 9 Tuesday morning after spending the night on the train drinking and chatting to two polish blokes who had also ben travelling around Germany for the world cup.
Mama's Hostel is by far the best hostel I have ever stayed in. It was just off the main square and close to all the major attractions. It only had about 5 dorms and it was very homely which meant that everyone (apart from the French) got to know each other. The pound goes a long way in Poland as it does in pretty much in all the eastern european countries. A beer is about a pound and meal with a beer comes to about 4-5 pounds. milk bars are even cheaper, you can get a traditional Polish meal for two pounds. The weather, like in Germany, was consistently 30-35 degrees.
The first day in Krakow I just wondered about to see what the city had to offer and to get my bearings as I was pretty tired from not getting much sleep on my night train (I think this might be a sign of things to come).
Wednesday I walked around the square which consists of the Town Hall Tower, the Cloth Hall, Mariacki Church and St Adalberts Church. I then slowly made my way down to Wawel Castle and Cathedral as it was very very hot!! Once I got to the castle I walked around the grounds and took a few pictures like a typical tourist. After the castle I spent the rest of the day sat down by the river Wisla. in the evening I sat on the balcony of the hostel, had a few beers and mingled with the other guests
Thursday I went on a tour to the Salt Mines in the town of Wieliezka which is about 15km outside of Krakow. The mines consisted of 300km of subterranean tunnels reaching a depth of 327m. The best part was the lift at the end as it went really fast and shook like mad!! In the evening I was going to go out with the rest of the hostel (a part from the French) but as soon as we left the hostel everyone want to go to different places so I went back to the hostel with an American girl called Sara, had a few beers and chatted until the early hours of the morning on the balcony.
Friday I spent the day wondering around Krakow with Sara doing tourist things and returned to the castle to do some of the exhibitions. The Dragons Den was the best one (it was also the cheapest). It was a spiral stair case (that I kept hitting my head on), which lead to a cave under the grounds od Wawel Castle. In the evening we went to a Milk Bar for dinner and had some pierogi, which are dumplings normally filled with cheese and cabbage. Afterwards Sara and i went to a bar before retreating to OUR balcony at the hostel.
Saturday i went for breakfast with Sara and strolled around a part of Krakow we had not been to before i headed to the station to catch my train to Warsaw at 1600.
All in all I really enjoyed my time in Krakow and I would definitely recommend it to anyone. It is well worth a visit!!
