Not much to tell you about today, I'm afraid...
The boys woke very excited, because we're still at Coconut, but didn't rush out to do things like we thought they would. Instead, they were content to hang around the van, and play their computer games for a while, and Jo and I went down to the office and booked a couple of days worth of activities. The sun was out, and the sky was blue, and it was already warm. It looked like it was going to be a ripper!!
Last night, the boys convinced us that we should have a reasonably quiet day today, and go and take care of some retail therapy. We agreed, so long as Jeremy consented to a haircut. He's starting to look like a hippy! The shopping centres in Cairns are great, and so is the main street district, and the boys have had money burning a hole in their pockets for so long, waiting until we got to Cairns, so it only seemed reasonable. It's actually the first major shopping area we've been to since Adelaide, if you don't count Alice Springs (which I don't), and they both had a list of what they've been hanging out for. Fortunately for us, the little brother looks up to the big brother so much, that their lists contained the same thing - new scooters. So off we went, to all the shopping areas (there's lots), and to all the individual bike shops in town, and we found two new scooters. Not the same as each other, that would be disasterous, but similar enough and different enough to keep them both happy. I managed to get hold of some DVD's for the next couple of night's viewing, (might need another dvd shelf Tone...), and I booked Pixie in for a service. Jo walked the shops with us nearly all day, and bought herself a new rain coat from Kathmandu. We found a nice little french patisserie for lunch, which also sold the most incredible macaroons, and then headed to the lagoon on the waterfront so the boys could have a play around and a swim. But it was closed for maintenance. I told them they should have known we were coming, and made sure they were finished by now, but the guy just smiled and apologised. They put him on gate duty, because he doesn't speak English, so I asked him if he would go and get us two coffees and donuts, but he just smiled and apologised... The game wasn't as much fun as I thought it would be, so we moved on.
We decided that it was probably best to come home and use the water play area and pools at the park, so we spent the rest of the day lazing around here, doing nothing much at all. But that's what it's all about, isn't it? This is exactly the reason why we tried to accomplish so much in Port Douglas, to create the free time in Cairns. We built the two new scooters, played in the swimming pool, roamed the streets envying and marvelling at everything, and just hung out...
For dinner, I spotted something I haven't seen for years, and something I never thought I'd see again. 'Sizzler' used to be a favourite for our family when we were on holidays on the Gold Coast, but they disappeared from everywhere I know, a long time ago. I can't remember the last time I saw one, but I think there was one in Gosford which became something else, which also went broke... Anyway, there's a sizzler in Cairns, so we went for dinner tonight, and it was great. The food was awesome, and Dylan ate heaps (which never happens at dinner), and it's much the same as I remember it from years ago. It'll never win the silver service, fine dining of the year award, but you can eat as much as you like, it's casual enough for thongs, and they were really busy. It was a fun blast from the past, and I'm glad we were able to share it with the boys, I'm sure we'll go back again...
Sorry if this one's been too boring for you, but occassionally, days like these are the ones we enjoy most of all. I'll see if I can organise something more sensational for tomorrow...
