Pete's Travels
When I arrived in Florianopolis, I decided not to go to backpackers hostel, and instead head to the east of Isla de Santa Catarina. At the time, I wanted some time to myself, chilling out on the beach away from any distractions. So, after talking with the tourist information, one of the local guys had some pousadas (apartments) where I wanted to stay, so we left for Barra da Lagoa, right next to an unspoiled 14 Km stretch of beach.
Florianopolis is like a scaled-down version of Rio. The day I arrived the sun was shining and the surroundings on the drive through the island were impressive. I arranged to stay a couple of days, which would give me enough time to recuperate and detox.
The following day, it rained fomr soem time, which didn't allow me to see what the area had to offer. I filled the time by walking through the village to the lake on the other side, reading, using the internet and taking my time to cook a delicious meal! It was far removed from the exploits of the past month where I would be on the go all the time, activities and sightseeing, and going out in the evening drinking.
It was nice to have to time to myself, but I soon was ready to get back into the party spirit, and was looking forward to getting to Rio, since the rain meant there wasn't much to do. However, the next day had glorious sunshine all day, so I decided to take a walk along the beach. I was really enjoying the white sand beach, listening to my iPod. I must have walked 10 Km or more, meeting only a handful of people on the way. It was really relaxing, but the further I walked, the further I would have to walk back, which proved a little more difficult, since the wind was against me and my feet were beginning to hurt. I'm now sure walking all that way barefoot isn't good for you!
Arriving back at my apartment, I showered, changed and headed out to catch the bus for Florianopolis town centre. I bought my ticket for Rio for the next day, and went to find a restaurant. By the bus terminal was a sushi restaurant, and since I'd never had it and knowing that the fish would be fresh, I decided to go for it. It was really tasty but it was only towards the end I found out what wasabi tastes like%3B a good drink of beer was needed after that!
So, the next day I took the 2pm bus bound for Rio.
