So... 5 days have passed (or is it 6??), the train ride to Venice was uneventful (except for the two couples in the seats in front of us who had already got into the spirit of Venice by smooching and cuddling in front of us to vomitting point!). As soon as we got off the train Ann started smiling more than usual "this is way better than Rome!" she kept saying. There was water everywhere, no cars and many many many shops! Glass and masks were everywhere and not only were there clear skies but it was more than 4 degrees for the first time in days!
No time for fun on the first day, it was off to do our first load of washing... yes Greg icebreakers do need to be washed more than once every 157 days after all!
Breakfast at this tiny hotel was much more to Gregs liking, we had several courses of cereal, toast, crossants, cheese, yoghurt and of course coffee! A lovely English couple talked to us over this feast... mostly about how dreary England is... can't wait for London, even the poms don't like it!
After aranging our sweet smelling wet clothes around the tiny hotel room the night before we came back after breakfast to find that the hotel person had taken it all down... so we put it all up again, after a few days things eventually got dry and we had clothes again, yay.
We went to St Marks on Sunday after mass (yes Mums we have been going!... although we can't understand a word of it apart from the sign of peace!) and found millions of fearless pigeons that didn't flinch when you tried to scare them away (much to Ann's horror) and millions of tourists (much to Greg's disgust). That afternoon things finally started to catch up with us... we veg'd out in front of MTV (Kylie vs Shakira... "Star Wars") and before we knew it 4 hours had passed! how embarassment.
The next day saw much more activity... Ann went on a bit of a shopping binge (the amount of money spent will not be disclosed), Greg got us lost three times too many and the map passed forever to Ann and we ended the day with a Jazz concert in an ancient prison. Greg got very happy off a very cheap Grappa on the way home (Damo are you proud?).
Feeling very tired an exhausted, our last day in the watery city was spent mostly on ferries to and from islands around Venice, we saw guy make a glass horse in less than a minute, v.cool. Tea that night was at a restaraunt that felt suspiciously like hogs breath cafe except there were no curly fries. The food was oober good and cheap to boot.
So today we made it to Florence and climbed 6 flights of stairs with our big bags and all of Ann's shopping to get to our hotel, but it's worth the climb, the rooms are awesome, best bathroom yet (Ann is satisfied)... jury's still out on breakfast (Greg is worried). Florence seems much trendier and younger so far lots of art galleries and museums to see and much leather shopping now to be done... Mamma G tick the bag off your Christmas list, and Ann's family -any requests?
Hope all your Chrissy prep is going as planned. Missing the Chrismas wreath candles every Sunday at Mass. Will write again soon... this i-cafe is cheap!
Love you all, thanks for posting, keep it up.
