Hi everyone,
So its day 4 and we've only had 1 day of rain so far -not bad... although the next 3 days are supposed to rain :(
The movies on the plane were awesome liz! We got to see the latest harry potter, an arty irish movie which was cool and Ann saw Licensed To Wed while Greg watched Die Hard 4... we were having some girly time and boy time ;).
Once we got to Rome after a massive trip and only moderate amounts of sleep which was adjudicated by Greg the sleep nazi!! we struggled to negotiate the trains to the main station... Mum(Pat) we saved €5 each because you suggested we avoid the Leonardo Express... however this came at a cost of our sanity for 2 hours! Yes we were lost but we eventually got there!
oh but when we arrive to our 'hotel' we are faced with a huge wooden door on a smelly side rd that wouldn't open... luckily a nice old italian man with his 2 labradores appeared jabbering Italian, let us in. Six flights later (thank god we only had 12kg in our bags) we arrive at yet another wooden door that wouldn't open -this time it was smaller but there was no nice italian man. After trying to ring the door bell several times, calling the owner with no response and knocking on strange neighbours doors -Ann was very stressed and thought thats it we're going home! After an hour of sitting on the doorstep as it was getting dark and greg was about to go look for somewhere else to stay for the night -the lady arrived!!!!! No apologies or explanations.. trip advisor reviws here we come! Luckily the room was beautiful once inside and crossant and italian coffee for breakfast each morning -Greg is satisfied. A nice clean bathroom -Ann is satisfied:)
On Monday we went to church in the nearest Bascilica -which apparantly the Virgin Mary instructed one of the Popes to build -it was beautiful! Then we tried to see the collaseum but the wind and rain broke Ann's umberella so we went and hung out in a supermarket -Greg's idea.
Tuesday was a much better success when we went to see the Vatican. It was warm sunny and we joined a tour and learnt heaps of history as we checked out the Vatican museum, the Sistine Chapel and St.Peter's. We saw the tomb of JPII and climbed what felt like a million steps to get to the top of St.Peter's -equivalent to 40 storeys high we were told -wow what a view! Then we enjoyed some amazing Italian food (involving prosciutto and buffalo mozzarella!) for dinner at about 4pm and as the sun went down at 5pm bed time was around 7pm!
Trevi Fountain and bus tour were the highlights of Wednesday - Ann's shopping has begun in earnest - Greg despairs!
Currently writing this at 7am with the landlady's computer... she doesn't know. This is our 4th day and we finally slept in till 6am... breakthrough!
Happy birthday Anna if you are reading this.
Mum (Pat) I tried to send you a message -did it work? Hope you and Dad are enjoying Cairns:) Selwyn feed the fish and eat some vegetables! Don't enjoy the sunshine too much without us. Miss you all very much!!
Please keep in touch
Lots of love Ann & Greg xoxo
