Sunday 13th January; visit by car [hired for two days] to Estancia Harberton. When aged 15 David read the inspirational book "Uttermost Part of the Earth" by Lucas Bridges, this is memoirs of his and his family's life in Tierra del Fuego. Lucas's father Thomas arrived with his wife Mary Ann [she was from Harbeton Devon] in the 1870's to start a mission to the local indians [the Yamana and Ona]. Later they wre given a large area of land by the local governor because of the help they were giving to the indians and to shipwrecked sailors [of which there were many]. They built the estancia and made it a reserve to try and protect the Yamana indians. Sadly this failed because of illness [eg measles] introduced by Europeans and the exploitation of their food sources, again by the Europeans. Lucas Bridges built a similar estancia to the north to try and help the Ona indians. We had a guide tour by a intern [tourism student] of the grounds and built on our knowledge of the family. The cafe, which is part of the house, has extensive archives of the family history. The current owners are 4th generation from Thomas Bridges [Tommy and Natalie Goodhall]. Natalie is a biologist and she has started a sea mammal and bird museum; this is built around her research. Again we were guided by an intern [biology student from Tucumen]; we learnt a lot especially the difference between porpoises and dolphins [former has square teeth and rounded dorsal fin]. Excellent day which built on our knowledge of the place and family and completed a circle for David as he has wanted to visit Tierra del Fuego for 45 years since reading the book.
