16th January; visit to Monte Dinero Estancia. We flew to Rio Gallegos from Ushuaia on 15th and visited the pioneer museum which included the Fenton family who we were due to visit the next day. Willis knew the Fentons in her childhood as they had a holiday home near her parent's holiday home in Cordoba. The Fentons have farmed Monte Dinero for 4 generations [120years]. It is the most southerly estancia on mainland Argentina next to the Magellan Straights. Currently there are three generations on the estancia Pat [Aunty Pat to Willis] aged 88, David her son the manager, Richard [manages the sheep], Sharon [husband manages the plant]and Caroline [breeds, trains and trails the working dogs, Kelpie and Border Collies]. Willis was very pleased to renew old friendships. We watched grading the sheep, a sheep rounding by the dogs and a demonstartion of sheep sheering. The visit included an excellent lamb lunch done on an open fire in the main house. Before returning to Rio Gallegos we visted the lighthouse [Cabo de Virgenes] and penguin colony [second largest in Argentina. By the time of this visit the penguin chicks are beginning to loose their down and will stay with their parents for 2 more months. In the evening a late flight to Buenos Aires via Ushuaia i.e. south first before returning north.
