I was awake so early this morning because of my excitement. Jen dropped me at the airport which was a different experience. When I was going through security the scanner beeped at me so I had to take off my shoes and let the lovely lady pat me down/feel me up. Slightly uncomfortable having my boobs rubbed in public but hey it was an experience!
The gate info isn't given until you have to board and you walk down a corridor that seems to never end before walking into the Tarmac old school style! The flight took forever, an entire 45 minutes!!!! Enough time for a quick power nap then off on my adventure to find the trains. First class ticket to Amsterdam Centraal thank you very much! My own little seating area and table. Noice!
I met another solo traveller, Samu, at the train station and we arranged to meet up at Anne Frank House. I went to check into my hotel but couldn't until after two pm so I began my adventure with some cheese tasting and an exploration of the central shopping district. It was all very commercialised chain restaurants with Italian food or any other countries food. Trying to find some authentic Dutch cuisine proved harder than it should have been! There were loads of cafe's where people sat in the windows stoned off their faces and store after store selling dope, hash cookies, magic mushrooms and I do t even know what the rest was. There was a strong scent in the air and after a while it started to make me feel a little ill.
I continued on my journey with a cone of chips and cheese sauce while a bike taxi took me to Anne Frank House. The line was HUGE! Didn't matter to me really, I would have slept there if I had to, there was no way I was missing it. I waited in line for just over 2 hours and Samu joined me about 30 min into the wait. The museum was really chilling. I felt a really eerie sensation as I walked around. It was amazing to see the space and unbelievable at the same time. Very glad I got to see it.
We then walked back into the central area and I snapped away at all the amazing buildings. Samu then went off on his own adventures and I checked into my hotel. If you could call it a hotel that is... The door gets stuck and i gave to kick it to open and push with all my body weight to shut it. The room is tiny and smells like mould. The furniture is really old and the thick red carpet stuck to my shoes as I walked in. I checked out the ensuite. It was a toilet and shower in one, kind of like in some caravans.
I left my bag and continued on my adventure. I went to the medieval torture museum, the sex museum and walked the streets checking out the buildings. Got myself an Amsterdam hoodie in hot pink and went and booked my evening canal tour.
It doesn't get dark here till late. My canal tour started at 8pm and when it finished around 9pm, still daylight! The canals were a mix of beautiful and disgusting. Some of the house boats looked gorgeous covered in flowers and decorated beautifully. The canals were a buzz with people cruising along having a few drinks.
After the cruise I decided it was time to man up and go for a stroll through the red light district. Let me tell you, some things cannot be unseen! I saw girls, stuck in glass door ways, jiggling their boobs at you as you walk by, some if you look not too hard, you realise she is actually a he! The girls look bored, texting or just plonked on a chair looking at their nails. Then there's the ones that are taping on the windows and pretty much begging every guy that walks past to pick her. I felt kind of bad for them. Most of them only wore enough to cover most of their nipples and some covered the lower fairly bits while others just didn't. The thing that got me the most, was the amount of tourists walking around their with young kids. Completely shocked me.
Well that concludes the fun and games from today. Time to crawl into my creaky little bed in my smelly little room and have a kip!
