On our way over to the West Coast we stopped inland in Hanmer Springs - really nice town in the southern alps, resembling a small Coloradan town with lots of huge pine trees - smelt v nice.
As the town is famous for its springs we had to sample them - so spent the afternoon in an amazing resort with about ten different natural pools, all of different temperatures and mineral contents depending on what you wanted. Endured the sulphur 41 degree C pool for about ten minutes but it felt like a very healthy thing to do.
It also had a lovely children's activity pool but everyone had to evacuate it because someone had done the unmentionable - glad it wasn't my child.
Also, at Luca's request, had a go at the Amaze 'n Crazy Golf, which seemed to be the hub of the town. Needless to say Andrew won; Matthew got a bit competitive, Luca cried and I had to cheat a bit.
Hit the road once again for our journey to see the Franz Joseph glacier. Fantastic scenery, a bit rainforesty and very prehistoric looking with huge ferns and lovely still lakes - tried to get the children to look out the window but they were too engrossed in their nintendoes.
Stopped in Greymouth overnight on the way - nothing to write home about, but unfortunately left Luca's new trainers at the campsite. We have enquired about shoe shops in Franz Joseph village but have been told we have to drive 4 hours to find a shop - I definitely couldn't cope living in a place like this! So now, since Luca lost his slip on shoes in Whangerei, he has to walk around barefoot - poor little urchin.
