Cannot believe it's been a week since I left already!! Three other volunteers who were on a tour last week have come back for the weekend and one of them is staying til next Friday so it's been really nice to be shown round by them for these couple of days. Been to a couple of monuments and the like now, which has been great as previously, my only cultural experiences were the Korean festival and Scottish dancing which are not particuarly known for being authentic Indian events! Although nevertheless great fun in themselvess. We've also been up to Old Delhi which is even more cramped, dirty, smelly and delapidated than New Delhi, yet there is something about the energy in all these places which means you can't help loving them in spite of the state they're in.
The hospital is still going well and I've been sitting in on peadiatrics and with the eye specialist as well as going with the outreach clinics. Although the language barrier is a pain, it has been very eye opening to see how differently the doctors interact with the patients here, i.e. very brusquely and making the approach at home seem exeptionally touchy feely. The mobile clinic, for example, got through seventy patients in an hour! The doctor's are all retired and give their time for free, which caught me out at first as some of them are so elderly (the eye specialist is 89) I oringinally thought they were the patients!
Oh yes, nearly forgot to mention the excitment of the cricket!!! Watched the semis against Pakistan, which needless to say, were extremely tense, and then was in a restruant for the final yesterday (was highly amusing watching the waiters trying to serve without looking away from the tv screen). Spent the aftermath on the roof watching the whole city erupt in fireworks. Was an amzing atmosphere :)
Missing you all x
