Oslo. Norway's capital. As we get off the ship there is a hop on/ hop off bus that is running a special for the first bus of the day. Half price. Good deal. We hop on and ride until Viegland Park. Viegland died in 1947 and let all his works to the city under the condition they be displayed for everyone to see. So veigland park came to be free and open all the time. Its a real pretty park but I think the guy might have been a daft as Van Gogh. His people are a little stange. We spend an hour strolling among the stautes and grab the bus to go over to Godoy Pennisula where the Kon Tiki muesuem is. Thor Hierdayl famous journey is told here. There are lots of very interesting displays and a short fim. In the film, there is a point where they talk of the trip from Ecquador to Polynesia and they happen upon a whale shark. At this point it had been very rarly seen, nevermind captured on film. So what do they do? Try to harpoon it. How poignent that in this museum for anthropology we find the matra of Man. "Oh look. Something new and different. Let's kill it." I know, I'm pretty twisted to come up wiht that but that became the phrase of the day.
We hop back on the bus and head for downtown to go to the National Gallerie. Now, I'm not an 'Art' person per say, but I liked this place. All the highlights in a smal area AND you could take pictures. AND, being Sunday, it was free. Of course the real draw is "The Scream" but the whole place was really good. After doing the Galleria, we head back to the main plaza and walk up towards the Cathedral. We past by it in the morning on the outbound trip to the park but it was early and not many pople were there. Now the area is full because this is where the main memorial is. Besides the very somber atmosphere, there is a morose feeling to it. It has been over a week and most of the flowers are now dead and rotting. It is very powerful and many are overwhelmed with emotion standing there. Ryan and I go into the cathedral so he can light a candle and have a moment of peace.
From here we walk back toward to Palace and we pass where the bomb was detonated. Well, about a block away it is blocked off but the buildings are boarded up and there are more dead flowers at the barricade. Back to the Pedestrian mall downtown ane we're hungry. Rather than go back to the ship we decide to try to find some more street food. Problem is, its either sit down resturants that will take too long or just coffee. Then Ryan spys an Asian family sitiing on a bench eating luch next to a small shop. Its not a shop but a small stir fry kitchem cooking healthy Asian food. Chris ordered Fried rice while ryan got sweet n sour pork with lo mein. It was real good and more than enough for the three of us. Never be afraid of street food that you can see being cooked.
From here we head to the waterfront to visit Akershus fortress. Inside is a museum for the Norwegian restance during WWII. It was a Tardis of a place. (Bigger on the inside) By the time we left the museum we are starting to stumble we are so tired. We trudge back to the ship and spend the last of our Krona at the dock picking up last minute souvenirs of Norway.
