Saturday brings us to Stavanger. Stavanger is the fourth largest city in Norway and primarily because of oil. When oil deposits were discovered off Norway's coast, the country decided to put its major export port here. So its no suprise that there is an oil musuem here. The day starts off with sprinkles again but that's why you pack raincoats. We start off in the old section of town that has tiny cobblestone roads and lots of flowers. A very nice place to stroll and sniff. We wander through until we reach the lake at the center of town and walk around that. The Market place should be open but because of the shooting, it is spotty. Some stalls are, most aren't. We've been told that the cathedral is closed today because of a wedding so we're out of luck there. Its raining again so we find a coffee shop to warm up, get dry and nosh on those wonderful Norwegian pastries.
After a nice recharge, we head toward the Noregian Petroleum Museum. It chronicles the discovery of Oil off Norway and the technology used to drill for it.A very good mix of displays and hands on stuff. It was actually a very good, interesting place. As we leave a bus drops off other cruise passengers and the place gets packed. Timing in this life is everything!! Since its raining, again, we decide to go back to the ship to grab lunch and maybe try again in the afternoon. As we walk past, Ryan decides he has to climb Valberg Tower. (Just a tall tower in the middle of town that has great views.)
Ryan and I decide to try again when its is just sprinkling. We wander through the old section again because it is just so quaint. We come out by the cathedral and see people comming and going so we figure the wedding must be done so let's go in. The place is packed with wedding guests and they just let us in. After a quick look around we sneak out the back only to run into a very agitated deacon. Ah ha, the bride is late. We take up a place out of the rain and watch for her to arrive. Not five minutes later the Bridal party is rushing up the stairs and all is right in this little part of the world.
