Hello again! After an eventful few weeks I am now in Bogota the capital of Columbia. After escaping the sausage man on the boat, we flew into Cartagena without any problems. I was still travelling with the English couple from the boat. I stayed with them for one night before meeting up with Andrew the guy from London in another hostel. Cartagena is a city of two parts, based around the main port, there is the old and new city. The old part is the original fortified town, surrounded by a wall. Its quite a big tourist attraction, and every street is picture postcard! I would say it is the most Colonial Spanish city I have ever seen, including those in Spain! We were there leading upto the big three day public holiday of the Independence of Cartagena, which was also combined with the festival of Miss Columbia! We hung around for a few days a checked out the opening carnival of the feista, which was a parade around the main city wall. It was meyhem! There were thousands of people out on the street, and all of them had either water, foam, flour or paint! and let me tell you if you are 6´3" tall and a gringo, you were a prime target! We got mullered! I bought a can of foam, but it wasn´t any defence against the mass of carnage! After six days we left to head to Santa Marta in the north, and took a day out to visit The National park of Tyrona. For me, it was a bit of a wasted trip, because Santa Marta was.........well a s***e hole! The weather wasn´t particularily great either. After a couple of days, I decided to leave and head south through Cloumbia. I headed back to Cartagena for a night (5 hours on the bus) and planned to move on in the morning. However, when I got back, the fiesta was in full swing, and I couldn´t find anywhere to stay. So the guy in the hostel offered me a mattress and some sheets in a courtyard at the hostel. However that night I got ill, really ill! I was nocked out with a fever big time, and couldn´t stop being sick and other stuff! It was not a nice night! Though in the morning they found a room for me, and there I stayed for 3 days. Luckily, they has cable TV in the room, so all was not lost! After feeling better, I travelled to Bogata on bus. 23 1/2 hours solid! Ahhhhhhhh!!!!!! However, I made a school boy error when getting on the bus, by forgetting a jumper! So, for 23 1/2 hours I froze to death in my t-shirt!
So anyhow! tomorrow, I have a flight to Cusco in Peru, (Via Lima). I have booked to start the Inca Trail to Machu Pichu, a four day hike! I let you know how I get on!
I have to admit though, I think I have started to hit a wall with travelling! and am getting to a stage where the constant moving on is getting tiring, especially when you are ill. Mostly though, I need something to occupy my mind a little more, and cross words and reading books, just ain´t cutting it! Maybe I need to work!!!!!! noooooo!
Well, I shall take some time to think about it whilst walking the Inca Trial! I´m gonna have plenty of it!
Speak to you soon! PJ xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
