After all the mahem of the cities, I decided that the beach would be a good place to head for a few days. A few people along the way recommended that Venice beach in Santa Monica was a the place to go. I hired a car in San Fran, and for an additional $75 Icould drop the car off in LA. It was a long long drive (about 2 inches on the map!) It was around 400 miles, and took about 10 hours, with an hour stop in Santa Barbara. Highway 101 heads south from San Fran, and for the last 100 miles follows the California coast. I hit Santa Barbara around 6.30pm and had the mountains on my left, and the sun was setting over the coast to my right. It was a huge drive, but really worth it. I couldn't believe it but I managed to find the hostel, only asking directions once, and arrived about 8 ish. The hostel was as close to the beach as you could get, and looking from the common room window, you could see the beach and the sea! During the day I chilled on the beach, and in the evening ....well I think you've probably got the idea by now.......more drink. The hostel was full of party people, so it was never hard to find someone or a dozen people to drink with. Amazingly LA and the surrounding areas have very few bars! You can find them, but you have to travel a far distance. Enjoyed this place, it was cool!
