Gooooday from the marvellous city of Sydney!
Since we last updated we have travelled from Byron Bay to Sydney. As it is a bloody long way our trip consisted of stopping at the Mojo Surf Camp for a day of surfing and an overnight stop. (the 1st few photo's are from here) Carly didn't surf but as it was a lovely day she lazed on the beach with a few others. Paul absolutely loved it and said the waves were perfect for him- the occassional big one with some calmer waters.
It was great to finally arrive in the city of Sydney. Upon arriving both of our imediate thoughts were- this is so like london, an abundance of traffic and a mish mash of streets and loads of people around! It was rush hour though- believe it or not they do have rush hour in layed back Oz!
When we think of Australia we think of Sydney and then the major sights like the Opera House and Harbour Bridge and they certainly didn't let us down!
The first night we met up with our bus buddies for some free beer and entertainment. Well entertainment for Paul- the bar we went to had a body paint compo. Basically grils in knickers with body paint on them prancing around! Paul and the boys loved it!
Our first full day Paul pulled out the trusty lonely planet and took Carly, Luke and Charlie on an expert guided tour for the whole day. We started by walking through Hyde Park stopping at St Marys Cathedral then to the Royal Botanical Gardens, we spotted the Opera House from here and took plenty of pics accross the water. We headed up to the Opera House for some closer pictures before stopping for some lunch in Circular Quay and viewing some lovely cars! We walked through the oldest part of Sydney- The Rocks. We then headed across the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Our day was starting to take toll now and we were feeling pretty nackered so we boarded the subway back to our Hostel. We all went out together that evening.
We have visited Paddys Market, we both bought a few bit and Carly bought some Uggs (ugly big boot thingys) perfect for the colder weather in New Zealand. One thing we have noticed on our travels is that every city has a China Town, as we have visited everyone so far we visited this one and shock- it is the same as any other. We found a small patch of grass and attempted to throw our boomerangs we had bought. This came to an abrupt end when Paul almost took a bloke out! We needed more space!
Our best night in Sydney has to be the evening where we went out with Charlie to the upmarket Darling Harbour. Here we got pretty drunk and danced the night away with normal people (ie. not backpackers) and it made a good change.
We Stayed at Bondi Beach for 2 nights with our friend Luke. The weather wasn't the greatest but Paul and Luke attempted to surf on 8-10ft waves. This was like nothing Paul had experienced as there were massive waves continously. The second day it rained continously however it didn't deter the boys at first. Paul made an early exit from the water after less than 5 minutes. The waves were atleast 12ft and when these break right on you there's not much you can do apart from hope that you come back to the surface at some point. Must say Paul had a near death experience! The 1st wave took him out then just as he got to the surface after swollowing sea water another wave crashed right on top of him. His heart was beating rapidly and swam to the beach to recover! Neadless to say he didn't go back in and sat in the rain!
We had planned to go and stay at Manly beach for a few days but as the weather was rubbish decided to head back to the city. We found things to do like visit the Art Gallery of New South Wales, walk round Kings Cross(wierdo land), Paddington(posh land) and Oxford Street(homosexual capital).
We watched a short 3d film about the deep Sea on the worlds largest screen at the Imax Cinema. It was good as it tought us about the coral and underwater world which we both love so much.
The weather had started to brighten up so we took a ferry over to Beach of Manly for day trip. It was lovely to have a nice relaxing day without too much walking!
The following day we walked to the Fish Market. Yes it Stunk! It was good to wonder round and look at all the different species of fish. We had a big lunch here. We had some lovely fish, chips, prawns, scallops and Callamari! This set us up perfectly for a night at the Opera House. We donned our best clobber and headed off to see a Drag Queen Cabaret Show. It was an intimate venue in the Opera House but we had barrells of laughs! Wasn't till after we left the show that we noticed our group was probably the only straight people in the audience!
We have been on a tour of the Blue Mountains. The mountains aren't actually blue though. They get there name from the blue haze that is given off around them. This day started with an early start. We stopped to visit some rather large wild Kangaroos, then on a short trek to Wentworth Falls. After lunch we viewed the 3 sisters rock formation. We walked down Furber Walk before catching the worlds steepest railway back up to the top. The angle of the tracks were 52degrees.
Today is our last day in Sydney. We both feel ready to move on to Melbourne, this is the longest amount of time we have spent in any one place since we have been away. Tonight we are treating ourselves to a meal up in the revolving restaurant at the top of the Sydney Sky Tower. Can't wait!
Sorry if anyone has started to get bored as they read this as it is a long one but we have done so much in Sydney and it's nice to share it with you!
Love to all.....
Carly & Paul
