15th March 2007 - Day 350
First day at Arequipa slept all day as we were both feeling sick. Went for a stroll around the square and booked a trip to Colca Canyon for the next day.
16th March 2007 - Day 351
Set off on the tour to Colca Canyon still feeling under the weather, the scenery was pretty cool and the altitude sickness wasn't too bad as we were sucking on coco leaves. We stopped to take pictures of the many different types of camids, alpacas, vicunas and llamas, but no guanacos - different country. The highest point we drove to was 4910 m and the air was very thin and difficult to breathe, we both added to the cairns placed at the hightest point of the pass, placed there for good luck and to make a wish. There were hundreds of these cairns placed all around the top of the pass. We stayed at Chivay in the evening and took a dip the the hot springs which was lovely!!! Had dinner at one of the restaurants, along with some pan pipe playing and traditional dancing, everyone had a really good time.
17th March 2007 - Day 352
Set off early at 5:00 to reach the Colca Canyon for 8:00 to see the Condors soaring around the canyon. But unfortunately the Canyon was clouded over. We stopped to take pictures and raced back down to Chivay Condor spotting on the way. Arrived back in Arequipa in the evening.
19th March 2007 - Day 353
Spent our last day in Arequipa sipping Coca tea and indulging on chocolate pancakes in a lovely restaurant called "Zig Zag" which was recommended by Maza and Richard. Then in the evening caught the Flores bus to Ica (note to anyone buying bus tickets in Arequipa do not use any agents as they charge you loads of Soles for the pleasure, which we found - too late, go directly to the bus station) Anyway the bus trip was one of the worst ever, i didn't sleep a wink as the bus driver was driving like a mad man, swerving around the corners in the pitch black, overtaking everything in sight.
