Dear All.
It's our last night in Chiang Mai but since we've been here, we've packed in every available hour and experienced so many different things. On wednesday we took a trip into the jungle and started off with a hill trekking walk lasting almost 2 hours. we were with 2 german students and an Aussie teacher plus 2 guides. After busting our lungs, we reached our destination which was the river. I made the mistake of asking the guide about the wildlife in the area. he told me that one could find King Cobras and pythons. When he told me, I wished I'd asked him at the end of the walk and not during it! I was wearing sandals!!!!!!
After lunch, we went elephant riding along and through the river, which was great fun. Then we had a swim in the waterfall before going white water rafting for about an hour. We then went bamboo rafting and finished the day visiting a Burmese village, where we were entertained by the village Elder in their Community hall except that it was a hut for the men to discuss village life etc. we were given bananas and locally made whiskey which only Paul drank! It would be rude not to after all. Paul was fascinated and said that he felt as if he was in some sort of documentary about a missing tribe.
Yesterday, we did our one day Thai cookery school in the well known home of a Thai chef. 9 of us in this group and we carved a rose out of a tomato and a lotus flower. Paul's attempt looked more like a car crash! Then we made a leaf out of a carrot and again, Paul's attempt looked like a bush with a boot hanging from it. We did have a laugh though. Paul redeemed himself by making a great spring roll! We also made a soup with minced pork, a red Thai curry with duck and sticky rice with mango. All of the above, we ate. (We're still OK)
Last night, we went to a traditional Thai dancing evening and had ringside seats. I say seats but we took our shoes off (as you do here) and sat cross legged while watching the show and eating dinner. It was an amazing show. The costumes and colours were stunning, as were the women dancers.
Today, we hired a tuk tuk for 2 hours to take us to various temples in the city and tonight we're off to the night bazaar again.
Paul picked up his made to measure jacket from the tailors, which we will ship home tomorrow.
we fly back to Bangkok tomorrow afternoon and from there we head to Kanchanburi for 2 nights. There we will visit the River Kwai museum and WW2 cemetary and the infamous Kwai bridge.
That's about it for now. Please feel free to send us a message, 'cos we want to hear from you guys as well.
Love,
Paul & Marion
