Dear All,
Two blogs in two days! We flew out of Bangkok this morning, which saved 12 hours on the overnight train. The flight was only one hour to Chiang Mai and it's 679 klms north of BK. The difference in the two cities was immediate as there is nowhere near the amount of traffic and noise as there was in Bangkok. Having said that, we enjoyed BK as it's a great place to people watch. We joined Marion's friend in a jazz club where Zoe's brother was playing trumpet. She plays the saxophone which is very popular here as the King used to play the sax. The King has even played with Bill Clinton.
We later sat in a bar close to our hotel and saw all kinds of things going on around us. People cooking in the streets, selling their goods, beggars, beggars with kids, beggars without limbs, ladies of the night, lady boys of the night, old men with young girls, you name, we saw it and we only had one drink!
Checked into the Maninarakorn hotel and bagged ourselves a suite for 23 pounds a night. We've booked elephant trekking for tomorrow, followed by white water rafting, lunch and then bamboo rafting and a swim in the waterfall. Paul has also been fitted for a tailor made cotton jacket which will be ready by Thursday. We've also booked dinner followed by traditional Thai dancing for Thursday evening. We'll do that after our Thai cookery course.
This is surely the land of smiles. We have met so many friendly people who are courteous, polite and happy. We're sitting in the internet cafe and the proprietor not only runs the internet cafe but books the day trips and 5 minutes ago arranged to do our laundery for us!
So far so good and we'll let you know more later in the week.
Take care all,
Love,
Paul & Marion
