Dear All,
We can't remember the last blog or where we sent it from. Anyway, we flew from Krabi to Kuala Lumur where we were met at the airport by a friend called Sue. She and her husband Mel have been living there for the last 6 years. The following day, Sue took us around the city and we were amazed how big, ultra modern and clean it was. We managed a trip on to the Petronas Tower skybridge on the 42 nd floor. It is the tallest twin tower in the world at 459 metres high. It's huge!
We drove around Chinatown and bought a couple of watches. Had a BBQ, played some golf and did a bit more shopping before driving to a town called Melaka on the SE coast of Malaysia. It's a beautiful old town and steeped in history. It's good to know that the old British colonialism is still alive and kicking in some parts of the world. Because Mel is retiring from Shell later in the year, they have offered to pay all his moving expenses back to the UK and given him a 63 cubic metre container. Sue said that if we wanted to leave some stuff with them or buy some furniture, they would load it onto the container and wouldn't cost us anything. Consequently, we went furniture shopping the following day! We ordered a few pieces of rosewood furniture, which is beautiful.
The Chinese New Year finally came to a halt last night with more fireworks at midnight. Thought it was after shock from the earthquake which hit yesterday, not too far from us. I kept looking for high ground everywhere we went (just in case)
This morning, we caught the bus to Singapore and arrived a day earlier than first planned. We didn't know that the Airshow was still on and hotel prices are at a premium. We took a walk in the area and came across City Square which was geering up to see if Singapore or Moscow won the vote to host the first Youth Olympic Games. We got caught up in the euphoria of the moment and joined in the pre-decision entertainment. They went mad when it was announced that they had won over Moscow.
Saw Raffles Hotel and had a walk around it and through it. To Paul it represented everything he dislikes about British Colonialism and British snobbery.
We plan to visit the Night Safari tomorrow and nature reserve.
Hope you are all well.
Love ,
Paul & Marion
