hi everyone, sorry it´s been such a long time writting, we havent always been near the internet recently.
I think our last blog said we were going to San Cristobel for christmas in our posh hotel, Well, it is a beautiful town with loads of market stalls and european style coffee shops all over. The Hotel was Goorgeous! it was a proper full-blown suite with living room, an open fireplace (very nice) a massive mirror and a private Jacuzzi!! we were there for 2 days and i managed to tot up 6 jacuzzi´s!! The bed was huge as well, it was about 6.6ft square so i couldn´t reach both ends together! The rest of stay in San Cristobel was really nice as well though we didnt get to do too much.
A couple of days after christmas we went on to Palenque, a bit further up in Mexico, to go and look at the Mayan Ruins there. They were fantastic and so close together, you could sit on a hill and see pretty much all of it. That was great and there'll be a couple of pic´s coming soon...
New Years was boring as we were in a village near Palenque, but had a 6am bus on New Years day, not much as going on so we went to bed and slept hardly at all because of various fireworks and next door neighbours being drunk etc. Luckily the start of the new year wasnt a warning for the rest of it. Our bus at 6am took us back into Guatemala, to Tikal, more Mayan Ruins, but on a much grander scale. We were told that if we wanted to see every ruin we would be walking a minimum of 15km!! It was worth it though, the whole place is set deep in thick cloud forest with Howler and Spider monkeys on almost every tree and Toucans, parakeets and wild turkeys (more exotic than you think and completly non alcoholic) scattered around the park. The first night we were there it was pretty late and we looked at some of the more remote ruins when we ran into the security guard who was starting to turn everyone out for the night. It just so happened that this particular guard wasnt too opposed to a smidge of bribery and so for about 5 quid we were able to stay on in the ruins well into the dark hours and were completly alone, not a single other person in the place. it was amazing and one of those things that cant really be explained you all just have to take our word for it! We spent the whole of the next day in the ruins too, starting at sunrise on top of the tallest temple where you can see some of the other ruins poking out between the trees, very romantic if it hadnt been so cold! piccý will be posted as this was a fantastic experience. (and for all those Star Wars geeks out there this was used in the Return of the Jedi for a shot in Endor with the Ewoks - try and spot it once the photo´s been posted.)
From Tikal we went over to Belize for a bit, origionally heading to Caye Caulker to do some Scuba Diving, particulaly for diving "The Blue Hole" one of the "must´s" apparently, but there was a hurricaine somewhere near by and the weather was too bad to go for about 7 days so we knew we didnt have the time to be hanging around for that, so we moved on fairly quickly to Placencia in the south, where the beach is pristine and the favourite past time for locals was swinging in a hammock, something we now have down to an art form. Very relaxed and a whole lot of fun.
Back into Guatemala for a day or two, through Livingston and up the Rio Dulce river, then on into Honduras and to Copan Ruinas, which is where we are now. There are another set of Mayan Ruins here too, though much smaller than the last lot and they wil be the last ones of this trip. Patrick was ruthlessly dragged, by me, onto a horse for a 3 hour ride this morning which took us to a little local village through some gorgeous scenery. The horses were more than a little competitive too which i thought was great, though Patricks legs are suffering a bit now! and that brings us right up to date.
We also have some important news for you all, which our parents already know.
The Organisation we worked with in Guatemala have offered us both Internships at similar style schools in Ecuador for 6 months starting in April so we are now a bit clueless as to when we are returning home now. We think it´ll be great as its not only working with the kids, but helping other volunteers into the whole thing and being their back up support. We´re both very excited, though nervous as we have to get our Spanish up to scratch urgently.
Well, guess thats all for now, we will try not to leave it so long until the next blog, but you cant trust us...
Big thanks to everyone who´s been sending us messages and chirstmas/new years greetings. Sorry if we havent been able to get back to you, but we do love getting them.
Until next time...
Love Kat and Patrick
