Phil found a funky little 4th floor artists garret in the French Quarter. We arrived about 10:30 PM. While we waited for Tod the owner to arrive we met several neighbors and dogs. Tod finally arrived on a motor bike and we lumped and panted our way up the four flights with our suitcases and bags. The Garret was one large room with a bathroom off one end a little kitchenette called a Pullmans kitchen. There was a loft up a set of retractable steps. The loft was just large enough to accommodate one double bed. The bed downstairs was huge. The room had paintings and photos on all the walls. Some of which were for sale at exorbitant prices. It overlooked the city on one side and the French Quarter on the other. After settling in we wandered down the street to a cafe for a night cap. Next morning we had scrambled eggs and REAL hashbrowns for breakfast then set off to explore the old historic neighborhood. We wandered through the market and concluded it was the Capitol of tat and bad taste. We stopped to listen to a beautiful rendition of "First I was Lost and then I was Found" sung by a black woman with a beautiful contralto voice. She also played a guitar. There was a trumpeter who also played a harmonica and a third guy who played a trombone. Shortly after leaving them Helen and I were stopped by a black musician who thought we were twins. He sang a song about twins to us and engaged us in conversation gave us several hearty hugs and coerced some money from us. We crossed the railway tracks to see Old Miss and discovered it was lower than anyone had ever seen it before. We were stuck there for a long time waiting for the worlds longest train to pass. We then took a trolley car to the end of the line and got off at the commercial district. After walking back to the French Quarter we located Preservation Hall made a reservation for dinner at Muriels and had lunch at Stanleys. Back at our Garret we rested then got ready for dinner and a show. Phil had reserved 2 of the 4 "Big Shot" seats for the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. But since we are only Little Shots there was plenty of room for Phil on our bench. We thoroughly enjoyed the jazz session and decided to round off the night at the same little cafe. The evening came to an abrupt end when it seemed I had a touch of food poisoning. Next morning we were up and out early to fly to Atlanta and then to Savannah to pick up a car to drive to Hilton Head Island where lives cousin Carol her husband Gordon and their 4 cats.
