Friday 1st June
Journal entry brought to you by Tami
Today was practically a lie in! We got to sleep until 8.12am before getting the bus to Picton. Amos, Oli and Bill were all on standby for seats on our bus, planning on going round the south island, but Bill found out this morning he was on a different ticket to the other two, and so they had to go north, whereas he had to continue south. This meant that Oli and Amos would be on our bus again, but Bill had to transfer. It's a shame because although the three of them weren't travelling together originally, they'd all gone to school together, met up again in Australia and had been travelling in one group for about a month. We all said goodbye to Bill at the ferry terminal, where Sophie, Oli, Amos, James and I boarded and then played cards for most of the journey, quibling over the rules of cricket and various other card games. Our rules are clearly superior.
When we got to Wellington, we tried to get a room together in Base, but they only had single dorm spaces available, or a couple of pairs. We didn't want to be that split up, so the guy behind the desk was a complete sweetheart and rang round some other hostels for us. Most of them were completely booked up (most likely due to the Queen's birthday apparently), but the YHA said they had some 'Emergency' Rooms, and if we went down and asked for Holly, she would show them to us. It was all very funny! We went down the road to the YHA and looked at the emergency rooms (that looked perfectly nice and clean), and found two next to each other, a double and a triple, so Sophie James and I took the triple and Amos and Oli shared the double.
That evening we all went to an internet cafe to upload photos and send emails. Then on the way back, Amos and I were deep in some random conversation and fell behind everyone else, and then is when we found it. The world's BEST cake shop. They had everything. Gateaux, Pavlova, Sponge, Fruit cake.....the list went on and on. We eventually opted for one slice of Black Forest Gateaux and one piece of cocolate and custard cake, split them in half and had a bit of each. They were SOOOO good. Really yummy. Everyone else then got ice cream (as usual), and then we went to bed.
