Journal brought to you by Sophie
Today we did the one and only cultural thing that we have done for the past couple of weeks and that was go on a tour of Christchurch Cathedral. It was actually very interesting and beautiful, although according to Steve not as good as some cathedral in England. I think he said Winchester. I don't think I have ever been (correct me if I am wrong Mother) so I can't compare. The cathedral sits in the centre of Christchurch and was opened in 1881 after 23 years of construction. It takes its name from the Oxford University college. (Thought you may want to know about your rival university's claim to fame Matthew!) As we walked around we encountered fabulous stained glass windows and hand woven Maori mats, which are in there to demonstrate connections between those of the Christian faith and the Maori people. There is also one place of worship dedicated to those that fought in the the Second WOrld War for the COmmonwealth, which was very moving. They had a glorious font and a candle lit memorial for those to celebrate the lives of loved ones that have passed away. The floor had some beautiful mosaic floors and our guide was very interesting. He told us there was some issue with Christchurch Cathedral being accepted, as cathedrals are only allowed in towns with a certain number of people and the population at one point was not adequate.
After that we went souvenir shopping although I can't find anyone anything. SO don't expect things people, especially as I really can't carry anything else! As it was Steve's last night we went to a lovely restaurant that had no vegetarian options (how stupid?!) but luckily managed to cater for us. I had this delicious risotto and it was so nice not to have to cook for ourselves and then wash up. Mum I really want a cauliflower cheese grill and veg and gravy and Pizza Express dressing! I have been eating my 5 fruits and vegetables and have decided I really like courgette. I really also want your vegetarian toad in the hole and veggie sausage stew. I hate pasta now with a passion. I am never going to eat it again! I could do lasagne though...MMMM. SOrry went off on one then.... We then went to this Irish pub called the Bog and had a massive card playing session. I am so upset that Steve and Brian are leaving us so soon. They have been really great friends and they have been so much fun to travel with. It is like leaving home all over again when you meet such amazing people and have to leave them. Don't worry Matt and JOn they are not your replacements, no one could ever replace you - we love you far too much. You won't be able to get rid of us when we are back!
Hope everyone at home is ok and keep writing on our wall - it is great to hear from you. Nicky I hope you are preparing for our night out when I am back and Tony congratulations on the news you told me about ages ago - sorry it has taken so long to say that! GUG - have you been receiving any of my postcards - I hear there is a problem from New Zealand...
