We stayed in Namche for a second day for climatisation. I had a "day walk" with Lakpa to Thame village to visit the home of Apa Sherpa - the crazy dude who holds the record of summitting Everest 20x. He's doing his 21st time this week.
Apparently his client who he took to summit Everest (on avg it costs £40k and possibly your life to attempt to summit) got really sick so he had to take him back to Namche but I haven't been able to bump into him yet. It'd be awesome if i do!
Although it was supposed to be a "day walk", it was a continuous 7-hour return trek! I forgot to take my trekking poles and it made it more difficult. Walking up the steps in the mountains at this altitude is quite different from walking up the stairs in the office! The walk started at 8am. Mike had to stay in Namche to recover from a fever. But he should be good to go tmr.
I visited a Bhuddist temple at around 4,000m in Upper Thame and did a quick pray. By the time I left the temple it was already mid-day.
I decided with Lakpa to come back to Namche for lunch rather than eating in Thame as the quality of the meat there may not be good. So for the next three hours' trek back I was absolutely starving - I couldn't help but comstantly thought of the t-bone stake at Zufferano's in London! Without the poles trekking becomes more demanding at close to 4,000m. Although my legs were not tired at all, my heart was jumping like crazy walking up the steps due to reduced oxygen in the air - not severe at all but enough to make me feel breathless at times. A couple of times I had to stop and catch my breath.
Since I'm in Nepal, t-bone stake was obviously out of question but a Coke on ice + the Owen's Special (two main courses) was very satisfying!
