Owen and Sarah's adventure
Hi from Thailand! Woohoo we are here!!!!!
We have arrived after a long flight and no sleep! Hotel's big, nice and impressive!
Its only the first full day but already we've been to the tourist hub of Bangkok, Th Ko Sahn road, 3 wats (temples) taken a delightful trip on a river taxi and a tuk-tuk (they are brilliant!), been to Jim Thompson's House and Sarah's been bitten a zillion times by horrible mosquitoes.
When Sarah finally got up (at 9 so I wasn't sleeping in Owen!) we went for breakfast then went straight to ko Sahn road, a haven for backpackers looking for cheap deals on travel, accomodation and other things for the rest of the country. We'd heard a lot about it and it seemed a good place to start, packed road very interesting, bit smelly, but will be going back to book the trips to the islands and diving.
Why go to 3 temples in one day? Well its a tourist thing but more importantly its a Budist day today so no-one pays to enter any temple AND the government have helped out the Tuk-Tuk driver with petrol cupons so it only cost 20Baht (thats 30p!) to be driven around the city. Catch was we then got driven to a Thai Taylors, where we got the hard sell to buy a suit.
I'm loving the tuk-tuk's they are so cool, the Thai's have no road sense, it's just go and hope for the best, crazy!
The first Wat was a 45m high golden budda that only just fitted in the photo. The second was the Lucky Budda which is only open to the public once a year. The last was the Golden Mount which is one of the highest bits of land in bangkok, with another temple on top, so it gave excellent views of the city. Thailand has 450 temples, at least, just in Bangkok, so think we are going to get a bit bored of seeing yet another golden buddah!
To get to Jim Thompson's House we took the river taxi. We got on the boat without paying thinking we must do it at the end, but no no. After the boat started off men and women with riot helmets on walked around the edge of the boat (which is only about 15cm wide) with only a thin rope to hold onto collecting the fares. Again mega cheap 5p!
Dont think Health and Safety exists in Thailand!
Jim Thompson's house was very impressive, and really interesting, had some nice food, then headed back to hotel to write this.
Going to go to Siam Square tonight.
We'll email soon with more exciting tales of the orient!!!
