Getting up early we went down for a quick breakfast in our hotel in Rhodes then jumped into a cab for the 5 minute ride to the wharf. A beautiful day and the ferry was waiting for passengers so we loaded our gear on, finding a seat for ourselves in a front corner where I could stretch my legs out....
The plan was to sleep a bit on the 5 hour ferry ride as we got up at 6.45am, a terrible time to get up on holidays! We did manage to sleep a little but the ferry was doing the 'bus run' past several other islands on the way so we took to opportunity to go out on deck and check out each island as we came into wharf. This way we briefly visited the ports/town /islands of Halki, Kos, Kalymnos, Leros, Lipsi and finally arriving at Patmos.
We unloaded at Patmos in a picturesque inlet and town, making our way to the taxi stand. When I asked to go to Scala Hotel the taxi driver laughed and pointed to it about 100 metres away!
So we walked across to book in, this hotel is really nice, lovely pool out the front, nice big marbled entrance and the room is nice and large with the best bathroom yet out of all the hotels we have been in.
Having checked in we walked through the village to inspect the shops. We decided to hire a quad bike while here which the guy said he would have one available at 6pm. Quad bikes are all the rage on all the islands as you can drive them on the roads any time of the day or night - and no one wears helmets on any of the quads or the thousands of scooters everywhere.
As it was only early afternoon we decided to take the 2km walk up the mountain behind town to another monastery up the top. This took about 40 minutes to the top where we found it very busy with tourists. Having inspected the place right through we walked back down the walking path into the town, coming through a side street which led us into the shopping streets behind where we had been previously. As we had about an hour to kill we decided on some cold drinks before getting our quad bike. Finding a small bar cum cafe, we purchased some nice cocktail drinks and watched the life of the community around us.
Finally we picked up our quad taking it over to the hotel ready for a big days use tomorrow!
We cleaned up, then walked out the front of our hotel into the restaurant out the front but one not tied to the hotel. We enjoyed one of the best meals (we seem to say that everywhere) joining a conversation with a young honeymooning Mexican couple and two other woman who were off the cruise liner out in the bay. They swear they will come and visit us in Australia.....
Leaving the restaurant we walked to a nice ice cream bar so Liz could have her yoghurt and berries gelato before we crashed out for the day.
