Leaving our hotel in Hania on Crete after a good breakfast we drove down to the old section of Hania town to explore. What we found was the an old fort wall around the port section. But even more delightful was the harbour setting lined with shops and restaurants all around the bay. The atmosphere was buzzing and walking through the streets behind the waterfront we marvelled at the beautiful little alleys with pretty houses and flowers tucked into every corner. It was a picture of true European living and we delighted at what we found around every corner. This was real fun which meant we spent longer doing this than we intended, so once we had a coffee we left to visit Moni Prevelli
Moni Prevelli is monastery located on the south side of Crete so we had to travel across the island from the North side to the South side. Once again we found ourselves going down the mountains and through tiny little villages hanging on the side of mountains with roads about one and a half cars wide - so interesting when a tourist bus comes the other way and the drop is hundreds of feet or more....
But the main reason we went there was to visit a beach - Prevelli beach, which is a very popular swimming spot.
Arriving at Moni Prevelli we went through the Monastery and into the museum - imagine our surprise when we found that this was the monastery that sheltered Australians, New Zealanders and English soldiers during the Second World War! They saved many lives and one of those soldiers was a man from Perth, WA. He and his wife paid for the museum to be built and in the 50's he named an area where he lived as Prevelly Park - after and in honour, of the Monastery that saved his life! We were stunned to find this as we least expected to find this kind of information, but it was so interesting to read. Turned out to be a great visit in the end, even when we drove down to the beach we came across a War Memorial to the Australian and New Zealand soldiers, high on a hill over looking the beautiful bay of Prevelli
Leaving the beach we cut back across the island once again to find our accommodation for the night. This was in a holiday location named - Bali! Another lovely holiday bay filled with resorts on the beach. Our resort was Bali Star Resort, a pretty luxurious accommodation on the top floor looking out over the pool area to the beach. Dinner in the resort was a buffet but most of it was western style food and we have developed a taste for Greek food so we
