Slept in until 8.30 this morning. It felt good to relax a bit prior to going down for a good brekky.
After checking out we took the free shuttle down to the city water front and purchased tickets for the 'hop on, hop off' bus. Showing 8 different stops we got off at the third stop to inspect a very old church. Amazing how much importance the average population put on all the trinkets. Quite disturbing to see so many people coming in, crossing themselves endlessly, put money in with little notes for prayers, kissing photo's and other artefacts. No mention of scripture anywhere here and the whole thing is so commercialised. Little wonder they won't accept The Lord at his return, they are so ingrained in the Church and its authority.
Somehow we didn't meet the next passing bus and to 'save time' we decided to walk to the next stop. Wow, it was up the side of a near mountain in the middle of the city, if only we had realised, but we finally got to the old fort, built by the Romans before Christ!
Running out of time we took the bus back to base, purchased some sandwiches in a cafe and then caught the shuttle back to the hotel to pick up our luggage. Taking a taxi we headed to the airport to fly to Create via Athens.
The flights to Athens was short and we had to run through the airport to get to the gate in time for our flight to Crete - but we made it!
Arriving at Crete we met the guy who had our hire car for us and he allowed us to follow him to about 3 blocks from the Hotel we are staying in making it easy to get through the city of Hania out the other side and find our way to the hotel
After checking in we decided to head out for some food even though it was 10.30pm. The guy on the hotel desk told us to walk half a block to a restaurant which would still be open. Here we met an old man on his own in this beautiful place with a swimming pool and all. He made us the most amazing meal, by far the best food we have had in Greece, it was simply superb!!!
Before we could leave his family (wife, son and daughter) turned up and his daughter came and chatted to us. She was a lovely 26 year old girl who has studied to become a teacher of history and very chatty about a lot of things. We sat there until 1.00am talking and they really were a lovely family, we had trouble leaving!
In all, another eventful day full of highlights but now for Crete......
