My international experiences to date only include going to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, UAE last spring break. I want to go to China because I believe this is a great destination for anyone wanting to start a business abroad. In two years, the GDP of China will have overtaken the GDP of the United States. This is an indication that China's economy is well suited for entrepreneurs and global engineers. I think the main professional work difference would have to be the way we handle our differences in opinions in the workplace. In America, I might be able to tell my boss he is wrong, but I don't think that would fly in China. The main cultural difference I can expect will be the language difference. Though English has become a universal language, we still have to overcome the many different dialects of English spoken around the world. The main political difference I experience will be living in a communist society and how that plays a role in everyday life. I predict that I will be surprised by the food- going to China I am very skeptical about the food but maybe I will end up enjoying it. Finally, the major differences in living conditions will be dealing with population overload. I don't really experience that much in Portland, we are a pretty small city- so I'm looking forward to seeing how this pans out. Overall, I am very excited for the trip- both for professional and cultural reasons.
