Wednesday 7th May - it is so nice to be on a tour that you don't need to be on the bus until 9am. We had a lovely sleep in until 7.30am !! So excited as we are going to Mont St Michel today - YES !!!!! We are all praying for sunny skies or at least skies with no rain. Every day on the bus we move two seats so today we are one seat back from the front seat of the bus with the huge picture windows which make great photo opportunities. So tomorrow when we travel to the Loire Valley we are in the front seat behind the driver, Christoph. There are a couple of people with the sniffles, sore throats etc so moving away from them is always a good plan!!! We actually went out and bought more Vitamin C and echinacea so we can double up on both. Then again we are in France and their wines here have no preservatives, hence no headaches from the red wine, I could always drown any bugs that come my way LOL.
The countryside is so green which adds to the picturesque surrounds & I hear cameras snapping away up and down the bus. The road trip today takes about 1 and a half hours and It rained off and on the whole way but as a miracle the sun comes out just as we hop off the shuttle buses to walk the rest of the way. The cost of parking is 20 Euros per hour and we will be here for 4 hours oo la la !!! Anyway we hoped off our bus, walked 8 minutes to the shuttle buses, then walk another 14 minutes into the village.
Mont St Michele is an UNESCO World Heritage site. The Abbey is perched atop a rocky outcrop linked to the mainland France by a narrow causeway. There is only one road in and out, through shops and restaurants and the road gets steep and then you climb, we were told, 200 stairs to the top of the Abbey - OK Shell one step, then another then another and you will soon be there I kept telling myself and what do you know we got there, hmm that wasn't too bad and the views were amazing !!! We then followed the audio device directions which took us through 15 rooms of the Abbey and each room had a different tale to tell. To be honest it was really interesting and a couple of times I hit "replay" so I could listen to the history/stories of these magnificent rooms. I came prepared for cold weather; vest, rain proof jacket and a beanie but by the time we got to the top, the vest and jacket were off and my hair was up in a ponytail but once we went out onto the Abbey walls there was a lovely cool breeze which cooled us all down.
For it being the start of the tourist season it was packed and so many school trips were there also. We were given more than enough time to wander around, walk back down those 200 stairs, have lunch then head back to the bus. One word describes today - HIGHLIGHT !!!!
It's funny you know, in the mornings everyone is really chatty but after lunch half the bus is asleep LOL. Back at this glorious hotel by 4.30 which have us 2 hours before our group dinner at a local restaurant. Time to have a shower and start packing as we have to have our bags out by 7.30am. Speaking of tomorrow, it's day number 7 we have been away and every time we travel day 7 is the day of tears and homesickness from me , I just want to go home !!!!! but once day 8 starts I'm fine. I get this way on every trip no matter where we go. Oh death YAWN YAWN hmm must have been all that red wine.
Nighty night xx
