Another action packed day - well as action packed as you can get in Fiji whilst on 'Fiji time'. Had an amazing tropical breakfast - watermelon, papaya, pineapple, cereal, freshly baked Fijian pancakes (much like doughnuts) and coffee. That prepared me well for our morning snorkelling trip out to see reef sharks (harmless to humans). The boat ride was extremely bumpy - we were just sat in the bottom of a fibreglass boat (no seats); the ride made me wonder if my coccyx would arrive at the reef in one piece! It did, and I jumped overboard once again to enter the colourful underwater world. The reef was the best I've seen yet, teaming with aquatic life. Fish patterned like zebras were swimming right up near my mask. It was fascinating. The highlight of the trip though was seeing white tipped reef sharks. They were smaller than I imagined, and there were about 4 in total. My other highlight was seeing an octopus and then amazingly a reef shark came along, grabbed the octopus, and ate it! It was so cool to see that happen in reality. In the afternoon, a large group of us went on a guided hike to the summit of a rock on our island Wayalailai. It only took about 45 minutes to get there but it was a steep ascent and a challenging climb. The views were so worth it though - panoramic views for 360 degrees. To the south were the Mamanuca islands; the west, the mainland of Viti Levu; the north, the middle islands in the Yasawa chain; and to the east, the Pacific ocean as far as the horizon. It really defined breathtaking. I was definately ready for dinner after that climb! I also forgot to say that yesterday, I tried coconut water for the first time and it was very hydrating. I'm loving getting into the culture here. xx
