Last night we were treated to some Fijian dancing at Korovou eco resort, complete with grass skirts. Following a good nights sleep, 8 of us went on a snorkelling trip to an area known as a local place for manta rays to hang out. I wore flippers for the first time ever! We were on the boat and then all of a sudden the guide shouted 'get out, jump, jump' and so we had to jump quickly out of the boat and into the sea, which was a bit nerve wracking, but also thrilling, having never done it before with big sea creatures below you. It was worth it though, as through the lenses of my mask I saw a giant manta ray gliding along about 3-4 meters below me. It was the coolest thing ever. I followed him along for a bit until he was too deep to clearly see. I found some coral but alot of it was dead. I had to keep emerging from under the water to make sure I hadn't drifted from the group. After lunch we boarded the Yasawa Flyer again and made our way to Wayalailai (also known as Wayasewa) island. After a very bumpy transfer boat ride, we arrived at the resort which is the most beautiful yet. There are 6 of us all on the same package, which is fab. This afternoon, Sophie (one of the six) and I, sat with some local women from the village and learnt how to weave. I made a bracelet and then made an anklet out of shells. It was a great cultural experience. The evening theme was 'Fijian' night, where I got to experience my first bowl of Kava, which didn't taste as bad as I'd imagined, and it made my tongue tingle. Kava is Fiji's national drink, made from the root of a pepper plant soaked in water. It tastes a bit like diluted muddy water and has a mildly narcotic effect, so the more you drink the sleepier you feel. I was happy to stop at one cup! Then we had a feast of Fijian food cooked traditionally in a 'Lovo', an underground oven. It gives the food a nice smoky flavour. For some reason I notices that the map location for this entry is incorrect and I don't seem to be able to change it. I am currently on the island of Wayalailai which is in the area of somosomo on the map. xx
