Ayuthaya the ancient capital of Thailand! Another quick visit, only had three days here as we are making our way up north to teach! A beautiful place, Ive never seen so many temples and ruins in one place! We went on a really nice boat tour, of four of the main temples in Ayutthaya; the boat broke down in the middle of the river but our captain who i think was about 90 jumped out and swam to shore and pulled the boat with him!! The chinese temple reminded me of the grand palace - gold overload!! we saw where the monks lived, there were 8 year old monks so sweet! Our favourite temples were the old ruins though, steeped in political history and it was sad imagining what Ayuttya would have been if the struggle with the Burmese had not happened, I think it would have made an amazing capital city. We hired bicycles for the day, definately the way to travel to get a bit of a breeze, although chris got a puncture and was carted off in a tuktuk with me cycling at breakneck speed through city traffic to keep up, my legs nearly fell off when we reached the guesthouse! In Ayutthaya we got to see many examples of local art (some good, some very bad!) and managed to get to the local college of folkart and crafts where we went into all the students workshops to see the different types of work they were producing - Rattan weaving was the most impressive, the speed at which they wove was unbelievable! A lovely Thai girl took pity on us in the college canteen and gave us a guided tour in her lunch break which was really sweet. we stayed in yet another lovely family guesthouse, with a perfectly spherical thai grandma who stuffed food into us 24/7! We are now in Lampang waiting to start teaching on monday, excited but quite nervous! keep emailing eveyone, its so nice to hear from you, lots of love XXX
