DAY 9- 11th May:
Cant believe I have been away already for week... Time has gone so quick.
After a sleep in it was time to face the bath with hand held shower nozzle and wash my hair. I managed to wash my hair and flood the entire bathroom with water as trying to hold the shower head and wash at the same time is not a skill I have managed.
After breakfast headed out into the new town area of Sighisoura in search of a market... After close to an hour of walking around found no market but did come across the river and a beautiful ordox church. Headed back up the stairs into the old citadella part of town and up the clock tower. It gave beautiful views over the city and had rooms with museum displays of the history of the city.
Stopped in at the house were Vald Tapes was born and there was a fresco painted on the room showing him as a child, but they painted him with a beard to show as more mature.
Went on another walk and this time found the market. Was small fruit and vegetable market used by local selling whatever is currently in season. Found some delicious strawberries to snack on.
After lunch boarded a bus to the small traditional village of Viscri. The village is small with maybe a hundred houses. The village has a a fortified church from the 1140 approx. It was Catholic then now Lutheran. Every 2nd to 3rd week they have the mass. No electricity only candles. the single women sit together at the front so men know who is available. The young men sit up top. Climbed up the top of the tower, which was not for the faint heart... Very steep and narrow steps and most of the wood moved and creaked underfoot but you were rewarded with fantastic view over the surrounding countryside.
Spent the remainder of the afternoon walking around the village. Took a look outside the house that prince Charles owns. It is painted a light blue colour which is traditional of this area. Visited the local cafe were the women making the coffee is smoking at the same time. Walking around the town is like stepping back in time sort off... There is horse cart used extensively and there were no TV or computers to be seen. The majority of agriculture in this area is animals. They have fields but no crops or fences. The houses are also all in town not spread out over the countryside. The majority of houses have a small house on the front of there block and the animal barns and stalls in the back. The animals go out to the field during the day and then just in the yards at night. For example the cow or cows that a family has is milked in the morning and then goes out to the surrounding area together with all the others from the village under the care of a Shepard. The same seem to apply for lambs and goats. Sheep will spend a longer time up to months out with a Shepard.
Dinner was another amazing home cooked meal from your family and neighbor hosts. Vegetable soup that they have gown themselves, minced meat wrapped in leaves.
Also this area if Romanian has a large German influcence due to Saxon heritage. Many in the village can speak German and signs are often also in german.
This village is also home to the sock project. This is were local women took old wool sweater and used them to knit socks . They are sold here but also abroad and the money is used to support the community.
So much to describe about this place.... Hopefully some of the pictures are ok and help to show just how unique and special it is.
