May 21st,
Up early to try and wash my hair but there was only cold water so tried as best I could in the sink. Breakfast was better this morning with eggs with toast and jam.
Then it was on the bus to head towards Plovdiv.
We drove through picturesque countryside leaving the mountains behinds and wound our way through a valley. Was disappointing to see all the rubbish on the edges of the streams. The country is trying to introduce rubbish collection and recycling but I think maybe the take up is a little slow.
Arrived in Plovdiv around lunch so grabbed a quick bit to eat before starting a walking tour.
Was interesting to learn more about the history of the area. There was settlement in the area over 3000 years ago.
We walked pasted the Jewish quarter and learnt how the kingdom of Bulgaria defied German policy during the 2nd world war and didnt send it's Jew to concentration camps. Pasted a civial marriage and baptismal centre which was a nice flower bud figure about it symbolizing birth. Walked onto the larger mosque in Bulgaria( a reminded of the 500 year Turkish occupation) walked over the roman ruins of an ancient stadium.
Walked into the old town past the Russian church. Built in the city after the Russians overran the Turks in 1878. We continued on past the wealthy traders home built in the 19th century. Visited a small gallery with local craftspeople at work. Walked up to the Nebet Tepe hill which was been used a defense structure since tracian settlement thousand of year ago and more recently nazis used it as a site for there anti aircraft guns.
Walked back through old town and one of the cities gates. Defense structure still stand in place above were defenders would throw tar and oil on people trying to invade the city. Walked past the sveta nedelya church with it's large bell. Looked over the roman amphitheater. It is still used to this day for performances. Finished at the town square.
Walked a long way back to the hotel. Pasted many shoe shops and a hill park. Once back to the hotel got ready to head out for dinner. Went to a nice restaurant.
