Check list of what to take
Health
- Jabs - check this web site for recommended ones and see what you have had already. http://www.fitfortravel.scot.nhs.uk/destinations/asia-(east)/sri-lanka.aspx
- Malaria tablets - The malaria map on the fit for travel website shows that there is virtually no risk for the majority of Sri Lanka so we could get away with not taking any at all. If you want to go to the far north then we will need some. If that's the case then check with your doctor to see if you are ok to take Doxycycline. Those are the tablets we shall be taking and if you are ok to take those we can just get some extra on our prescription for you. (Saves you the £12.50 prescription cost).
- Take some mozzy spray containing deet
- Don't forget your asthma stuff
- Sun block. Body and for your face
- Some anti-diarrhea tablets
Toiletries
- Anti-perspirant isn't readily available in Asian countries as they don't sweat like we do so you will need to take enough of that.
- As little as possible of everything else. Just take small bottles of whatever you need as everything can be bought out there if you run out.
- Hair styling products - your hair will not behave properly out there due to the humidity so take things to tie it up and keep it off your neck as it will be hot
- Make up - very little as it will just slide off your face
- Small towel or even a flannel to dry yourself
Clothing
- Sun hat
- Cotton clothes or natural fibres. Avoid polyester if you can as you will sweat more in it
- Shorts
- Long trousers (not jeans it's just too hot for them) in case we trip to the jungle
- Nothing too revealing here as they are easily disrespected
- Anything you bring may get ruined by the deet (it seems to rot fabric) so bring your old clothes rather than your best clothes
- Having said that you may want to bring a nice outfit in case we go to a proper restaurant
- Bikini and sarong
- As we will be there in the rainy season it may be an idea to have a showerproof jacket like a pack-a-mack or kagoule
- I would also bring a cardy just in case it is chilly but I really don't think you will need a coat
- Best thing for evenings is a pashmina type wrap
- This may sound silly but bring comfy cotton underwear. As it is hot there you don't want to get chaffed from lacy knickers ☺
Footwear
- Sturdy Flip flops
- Walking shoes/trainers
- Some pretty flip flops if you want to wear them to a restaurant
Other
- Camera
- Sunglasses
- Small handbag for your passport and cash. Best type is the ones that you wear across your body
- Small Padlock for a locker if we have to stay in a dormitory (type that require a code rather than a key are best - don't want to lose a key!)
- Book or magazine (we may not have internet for long periods so you will need something to amuse you
- Travel insurance
- Passport
- Earphones if you listen to music
- Travel converter plug
If you have any room left
- a small pillow (we have bought ones less than half the size of a regular one)
- beach towel if you want one
Just remember everything you bring you will have to carry so keep it to a minimum
Don't bring:
- Anything expensive
- Best clothes
- Jewellery
- Food
- perfume
- Hair dryer/straighteners etc
- comments
