Leaving the friendly and well situated YC de Mer du Nord marina jest before 11:00 we motored down the harbour, put the mainsail up and almost as soon as we were outside the engine was switched off and we sailed. Passing through the gaps in the sandbanks that parallel the coast we got into clear water. We have sailed this coast before, the last time bringing this boat back from Holland, and it has towns, some quite large, built along the seaside at regular intervals.
We passed Nieuwport then Ostende, and Blankenburg then outside and around the huge Zeebrugge harbour we turned and headed in to the Scheldt. The tide was ebbing now against us and as we started the engine in a dying and now fickle breeze we had up to 3 knots against us.
Breskens marina is man made and has nothing but three restaurants and a residential development of dubious beauty. However the clubhouse restaurant has a great view across the busy waterway as the sun went down; the food was not quite so great, but at least we are now in Holland after a great sail of about 50nm.
Today's run, 52nm
