Noy's 4th Walkabout
The last postcard was about people, so now, The Games. We've attended four nights so far, Tuesday probably being the best. Jo bought all the tickets for us as soon as they were on sale and he deliberately planted us in a different part of the stadium each night. The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) has been one of THE stadiums in the world, ever since it was built for the Olympic Games of 1956. Statues of great sports personalities, the greatest probably being Sir Donald Bradman are all around the entrances, and the atmosphere inside is pretty electric! Three Australian performances stand out so far, the Golds won by John Steffanson in the Men's 400m, Scott Martin in the Men's Discus and Jana Pittman's 400m Hurdle success. For the English our Tuesday night "triple" and Kelly Sotherton's Heptathlon Gold were moments to savour but we missed the last part of the latter by not attending on Wednesday night.
Even the Australians are getting fed up with their national anthem (which Richard quite likes singing!) and their supremacy in nearly every discipline is embarrassing - but they clearly set out their stall to do well. Our big complaint (whinging Poms!) is about the commentating in the stadium! We have no problem with television bias but in the stadium there should be no bias or favouritism. Not so here! It is as if only Australians are competing and the rest are just there to make up the numbers. Richard is raring to make a complaint to the organisers!
Now it's the weekend and time for good old Aussie Barbie! More about that when we write again! Love from us both, R&J xx
