Noy's 4th Walkabout
A word about temperature - Until the last day of The Games Melbourne held a consistent 28-32 degrees, unknown in its history (Four seasons in one day, is its mantra!) but the day after temperatures plummeted to 21 (!) and now we're in Tassie it's a healthy, sunny, 18! We love it and feel "normal" for the first time in three weeks. On Tuesday we went straight to the Tasman Peninsula where Port Arthur is located to see the remains of the Penal Colony set up by the British in 1832, for "secondary offenders" (those who had offended more than once). It's not surprising that criminals in British Isles would often BRIBE the officials to send them here because, if they lasted the journey, their time at Port Arthur would have been hard but in a superb location! After staying in Hobart overnight we journeyed through the island up to the North through ENDLESS forests, high bush and mountains. Our photo's could never do it justice so we took very few. It was nearly 400 kms by the pretty route we took, via the Western side to Queenstown, down to Strahan on the edge of Macquarie Sound and the Gordon River, then on to Cradle Mountain.
