Day 304, 4 May 2013, Manhattan, New York - Food on Foot tour of the East Village. We have gotten good at the subway after a couple of days and made it down to (Very) Grand Central Station to meet the guide and a massive group of 40 people. Took a train all together to 14th Street (only lost 2) and visited a range of good, cheap eats - Vanessa's Dumpling House, the Artichoke pizza joint, This Little Piggy had Roast Beef sandwich shop, the Butter Lane cupcake bakery, Crif Dog (one of the few semi-healthy hot dog shops in New York). The final and best stop was Veniero's bakery - great gelato for less than $2 per pot. Can pay up to $7 in Times Square! Found quite possibly the most fabulous consignment boutique in NY - "Eleven" down on 1st Avenue. It's where Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Tiffany go to die and be reincarnated at a sensible price. Found an outstanding dress and James scored a pristine Ralph Lauren shirt. Ahhh... shopping in NY. Compulsory. Addictive. Completely Opportunistic - get it while you can - That's us, living a champagne lifestyle on a beer budget. We zoomed back to Broadway just in time to play the Newsies lottery for the second time. Still no luck, but have discovered the bar next door to the theatre has a happy hour and is a cracking way to while away the 30 minute wait until the draw. All dressed up with no where to go, we were still in the mood for a show. Checked out the "Once" show - $142 each for seats with a restricted view? Don't think so mate. So we crossed the road to the Imperial Theatre to check availability for Nice Work if you Can Get It - the Gershwin musical starring Matthew Broderick... (Felt it only fair since I'd nabbed a photo with him the other night....) Big splurge - $47 a seat in the upper level. As it turned out a pair of opera glasses would have been handy - but as the lights dropped there was a massive rush in the dark - we've christened it Broadway Musical Chairs - when there are vacant seats, easily accessible and closer to the stage it's Go! Go! Go! Ended up happily in the $70 zone. Brilliant, funny, snappily performed musical - never realised Matthew Broderick was such a great dancer and singer. Huge fun - had no idea this is the show where "You say potato, I say potahto, you say to-may-to, I say to-mah-to... Let's Call the Whole Thing Off!" came from.
