Day 303, 3 May 2013, Manhattan, New York. Phew - after a slightly easy day yesterday, due to me being tuckered out, we were back into it with a vengeance! En route to Central Park we walked through New York's Diamond District - so many sparklies we almost lost our eyesight. I was reduced to doing my Gollum impression from Lord of the Rings.... "Preciousssssss......" Central Park in Spring is super pretty and we chased squirrels, enjoyed the blossom and daffodils, avoided the horse carriages and the cyclists and walked to the middle of the park where we nipped out and spent an hour or so in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met). It had some wonderful Van Goghs - worth it just for them. It's a funny old thing in NY and we have NY Passes so don't need to bother this time round - but the Met, the Natural History and MOMA all charge around $25 to get in. They don't tell you it's actually a donation system... so you can get in with a donation of a quarter - Just do it with Confidence! (And we will next time we're in NYC!) Flitted through the Whitney Museum of American Art on our way back down the Upper East Side - discovered today's new artist - Oscar Bluemner (pictured). We grabbed a quick lunch on the hoof and made it in time to 51st Street to meet the bus for a tour of movie and TV sites in uptown New York (full bus - I really should have asked the guide for his licence to print money - god knows he didn't have one for stand up comedy - exceedingly bad tour to get stuck in traffic). Was however fascinating to hear about all the celebrities who have a base in NY and drive past their apartments, even had a stop outside Cafe LaLa from "You've got Mail". As day turned into night we made our way back to Times Square for our next adventure. We did our research before arriving in New York and found out about the lottery system many of the top Broadway shows use - even received a cheat sheet during our Walkin' Broadway tour with some more details. Basically the shows like full houses and it also allows people (like us!) who can't afford full price tickets the chance to see great performances. For instance Wicked! holds a lottery every evening. Two and a half hours before the show you can put your name in a hat and 2 hours prior they draw 20 names who can then purchase 2 front row seats for $30 each. Those seats retail for over $210 each! The show we wanted to see was Newsies so tonight we headed a couple of blocks over from our hotel to the Nederlander and put our names in the barrel. No luck however - but still a few nights in NY - it WILL happen.
