Up to a lovely breakfast made by our favourite (and only) chef. We had organised the same taxi driver that drove us to Tissa to take us away again to Tangalle. So 10 on the dot we jumped into the taxi after having a strange feeling that I had upset the Godfather by insisting that we pay with our credit card. I believe the reason for this is there may be a fee placed onto the total price. He was more than welcome to include this fee ( as others have done) but didn't mention it and just looked very Don'ish at me. Our taxi driver was much more 'with it' this time and didn't fall asleep once enroute to Tangalle. REALLY if there are road rules in Sri Lanka I have no idea what they are, it's just that the bigger you are the less you have to give way and also the louder your horn is. It was on this journey that I saw the most hair raising event I have ever seen on a road. We were driving down a four lane expressway, two lanes on each side with a median barrier separating them. All was OK, just the usual straddling the white line and near fatal misses until I looked out to my right to see on the inside lane opposite me a truck on the wrong side of the road keeping up with us heading right towards a few oncoming cars!! I was in disbelief and felt sure I was seeing things...but no. Well the oncoming cars just slowed down and pulled over to allow this maniac truck driver to proceed up the road about 500 mtrs and pull into another work location!!
We got to Tangalle safely (somewhat surprisingly) and booked into our hotel the French Residence. What a nice place it was. Owned by a french couple. A frenchman had married a Sri Lankan women and lived there 3 months of the year. Well, I'm here to say that the coffee was the best in Sri Lanka. It was french coffee.
It had a lovely swimming pool that we frequented a couple of times and was sooo refreshing. The first night we had our tea in the hotel restaurant and at 8:30 went to Rekawa beach to hopefully see some turtles come up to the beach and lay their eggs in the sand. A hit and miss affair depending a lot on the weather. We were lucky and got to see two turtles come up to dig their massive holes and lay approx 100 odd eggs then cover them up and shoot off back to sea. The whole manoeuvre took about 2 hours. Once they start to lay you can go up and look at them laying as they are apparently in a trance like state. We could only use a red light however so photos weren't coming out very well.
The next day was a relaxation day poolside then we went to a small restaurant that was recommended on Tripadviser.com, The Cactus Lounge. We both had a mixed platter of Garlic Prawns with Seer fish with salad and chips, OMG it was to die for. The chef/owner told me when we were leaving that the only reason he opened that night was because I had rung the night before to book a table (Tripadviser recommended this as it's busy and small). Well that made us feel both special and awkward at the same time. A truly amazing meal that I will not forget in a long time, if ever. Of course we gave him a rave review on Tripadvisor when we got home.
