Up and off to our safari in Bundala National Park at 0530! What a magnificent experience! One of the Godfather's sons drove us around in his safari jeep and for 4 hours we were enthralled with the sights and sounds within the Park. The Park was alive with birds and wildlife who were awakening to their day. We saw a huge variety of birdlife as well as black faced and red faced monkeys, crocodiles, monitor lizards, water buffalo and an elephant!!!
We spent a lot of time watching the wildlife and loved every minute of it. Part way through we stopped off on a cliff top to have a picnic breakfast with an amazing view of the beach and ocean.
We thoroughly enjoyed our safari adventure! When we were leaving at 10am we noticed the place as heating up a little with many more safari jeeps arriving for their tours. It was then that we were pleased that we had the early start to the day. It was a truly amazing experience seeing the animals in their natural environment.
When we returned to the hotel we actually collapsed onto the bed and had a wee moi as the early start was all too much for us. Later that day we ventured into the centre of Tissamaharama for a reconnoitre. Man it was HOT!! We were both leaking substantially whilst walking around Tissa. We were trying to find a place to eat some lunch as many of the shops etc were closed due to the New Year holiday. We came across a small place run by a family (mum, dad and three kids. All keen to practise english. The only food they had going was a Sri Lankan curry and rice. This translates to some rice and three plates of different curries, in this case vegetable, egg and dhal curries (fish was an option). Well it was near nuclear which was just great coz we were feeling cold….NOT. We had 4 bottles of ginger beer!! We were given the bill that said 600 Rupees. We were convinced that this must be each person as that was only NZ$6. So there followed some awkward moments where we tried to understand the bill he said NO 300 plus 300. It was so cheap it was embarrassing. Anyway we ended up talking to the kids and got their address so we can send them something from NZ at a later date.
Back at the hotel we decided to have our tea in the restaurant there. The young chap who was the chef, waiter, cleaner, porter and chief smiler was an inspirational young man. He looked about 16 but we would put his age at approx 19 but was absolutely amazing with what he can cook on the menu. We did have to wait for 80 minutes for it to arrive on the table which was too long for sure but we both wanted to cut this young chap some slack for all he was expected to do around the place. After that we collapsed fatigued into our beds.
