Day 9
Our second day at Hikkaduwa again consisted of lying under sun umbrellas, swimming in the sea, reading and relaxing, with a walk or two thrown in.
Day 10
Off to Galle in our tuk tuk, stopping off on the way to pick up a train ticket for travelling back to Colombo, that we had booked online (online shopping is a forte of Rich's as most of you will know). Of course, this had to have a little drama attached to it. In 37 degrees, streets so crowded we could touch the people on both sides of the tuk tuk, we searched and searched for the shop to pick up the tickets from. In the end, our tuk tuk driver 'parked up' and left us saying he would be back soon. 'Soon' turned into 'long' and I was pretty much ready to 'abandon tuk tuk' and escape the madness, when he returned claiming he had found the shop. After further navigation of the crazed streets, he once again 'parked' (which literally means pull over slightly and stop), he and Rich abandoned tuk tuk and me, and headed down an alleyway. So, there I sat, in 37 degree heat, stranded amongst madness, drivers yelling and gesticulating, horns blaring, when I receive a text from Rich….."I have air conditioning".
I have nothing further to say about that.
Our Guesthouse was situated in Galle Forte and we had an amazing view from the balcony, where we spent many hours sitting, reading and just 'watching the world pass by'. We saw magnificent sunsets from the rooftop, and at one stage we saw a tornado that was out to sea. During our three days in Galle we got to know our Chinese neighbours a little, we meandered through the cobbled streets, enjoyed some Sri Lankan meals and visited a Fish Market early one morning. Breakfast was had daily on the balcony...a magnificent setting. We were thankful to get some washing done whilst in Galle. It seems that in Sri Lanka, as there's little wind, pegs aren't needed and, if you have a fence or hedge, nor is a washing line.
