We spent the morning in Wellington, walking around the quayside and doing some shopping. In the afternoon,we caught the ferry to Picton then drove south down the coast to Kaikoura. We checked straight into our hostel then headed out in search of fish and chips for supper. The fish and chips taste so much better in New Zealand!!!25/08/06It had been dark when we arrived in Kaikoura so Mum hadn't been able to see what the town was like. Kaikoura is beautiful especially on a sunny day, the sea on one side and snow covered mountains on the other. I think Mum was definately impressed!!! After breakfast we went whale watching. I had heard so many stories from other travellers who had gone whale watching and not seen anything so I was desperately hoping that we would get lucky. We were barely out of the harbour when we spotted a pod of around 150 dusky dolphins. That was a good start!!! After following the dolphns for a while we headed into open water and it wasn't long before our first whale sighting. Instead of just seeing one whale though, we had caught up with a pod of 16 male sperm whales!!! The whales were all swimming in aline taking in oxygen so they could prepare to dive. We watched the whales for a while then one by one they all started to dive deep into the ocean. About 20 mintues later we caught up with the whales back on the surface and watched them dive for a second time. As we headed back into the harbour we saw some New Zealand fur selas sunbathing on the rocks. After lunch in Kaikoura it was time to head south towards Christchurch and Ashburton where we spent the night in a motel.
